Description

This is a house with a shop, built around 1870 and altered around 1980. It now operates as a restaurant. The exterior is constructed of orange brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with a cast-iron shopfront. It features a timber eaves cornice beneath a plain parapet with stone coping, and brick stacks rise from a hipped slate roof.

The front facade is four storeys high with three windows. The shopfront has a series of segmental arches supported by fluted Composite columns. These columns have rinceaux decoration within the arches, beneath a plain fascia and a small dentil cornice set on moulded brackets. The doorway and windows are replacements. The first and second floor windows are segment-headed sashes with one pane of glass each, set within segmental arches constructed of gauged brick and featuring vestigial hood mouldings. The second-floor windows have painted moulded sills, extended to create a moulded sill band. The third-floor windows are square-headed sashes with one pane of glass above a moulded cornice on the second floor. These windows have flat arches breaking into a frieze below a massive moulded eaves cornice on grouped console brackets.

The interior of the building has not been inspected. Historically, the site was occupied by Rowntree’s grocery shop from 1822 until around 1980. Joseph Rowntree was born in an earlier building on the site in 1836, where he lived until 1845 and worked until 1869.
