Description
The font, located approximately 30 metres south of Tetley Hall, is likely from the mid 17th century and is made of limestone. It features a tub shape with a square lower section and an octagonal upper section. The east side has two roughly inscribed 17th-century dates, with the lower one possibly reading 1660, though the final figures are very worn. This font is reputed to have originated from the Protestant church in the fortified settlement at Sandtoft, which was established in the mid 17th century by Dutch drainers. The church was vandalised by local commoners in 1651 and 1656, but it presumably returned to use before falling into ruins by 1686. It is believed that the font was retrieved by a member of the Stovin family from Tetley Hall, possibly George Stovin the antiquary, who likely inscribed the dates. The font is included in the listing partly due to its historical associations.
