Description

47 High Street in Crowle is a 19th-century shop constructed from colour-washed red brick and topped with a hipped orange pantile roof. The building has a rectangular plan and features a single-bay, single-storey street frontage on the east elevation. This facade includes a fifteen-light timber shop front with a fielded-panel door located at the northern end, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight. The door and window are framed by a timber surround with ribbed pilasters that have plain bases. This surround supports an entablature with dosserets, a plain frieze that includes a name board, and a shallow leaded hood, all beneath a low parapet wall with flat coping stones.

The southern elevation is blind and showcases an exposed brick dentil course at the eaves. The north elevation has a similar appearance, although it reveals the outline of a bricked-up window and doorway in the brickwork. The rear elevation, facing west, features an off-set plain timber door and also has an exposed brick dentil course at the eaves. The hipped roof is adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and extends beyond the brick eaves to allow for drainage into cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the shop was originally a single room but has been divided into an offset axial passageway with white tiled walls. The central spine wall on the southern side of this passageway contains three doorways that lead to toilet cubicles. A plain raised timber door on the east wall provides access to the shop window. It is noted that the internal spine wall, tiled floors and surfaces, toilet cubicles, and fittings are modern additions and do not hold special architectural or historic interest.
