Description

Gravestones and graveyard wall located approximately 50 metres north of Tetley Hall consist of early 18th century gravestones and a graveyard wall from the 18th to 19th centuries, which may have earlier origins and has undergone later rebuilding and repairs. The gravestones are made of ashlar, with some set on brick bases. The graveyard is enclosed by a dwarf brick wall topped with ashlar ridge coping, possibly reset, and measures approximately 8 metres north-south by 3 metres wide.

There are five recumbent rectangular gravestones, listed from north to south: 1) a gravestone for Joan, wife of James Stovin, dated 1729, featuring an inscription below an incised scrolled round arch; 2) a gravestone for James Stovin, dated 1762, with an inscription below a roundel that contains a relief of arms and crest in a foliate surround; 3) a gravestone for Mary, daughter of George and Sarah Stovin, dated 1759, with an inscription below an incised round arch; 4) a gravestone for Sarah, daughter of George and Sarah Stovin, dated 1733, with an inscription below an incised corbelled round arch; and 5) a finely inscribed stone from 1724 recording the burial of James, George, and Sarah Stovin, with an inscription below a roundel containing a relief of the Stovin crest (a bow with an erect arrow) and an incised scrolled round arch.

The Stovin family, who were Quakers, played a significant role in the history of the Isle of Axholme and occupied Tetley Hall during the 17th and 18th centuries. Additional burials may be located in the nearby pyramid monument to the east.
