Description

Fernlea is a house dating to circa 1830, built for the Brunyee family. It is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof, arranged in a largely L-shaped plan. The house comprises a two-room front, an entrance hall, a stairhall, a kitchen wing to the rear left, and an outshut to the rear right. The design is two storeys high and symmetrical, with three bays. The south front features a C20 six-fielded-panel door within its original surround, incorporating a moulded lintel, a plain overlight within a roll-moulded wooden architrave, and a painted wedge lintel. The windows are 12-pane sashes set in roll-moulded architraves with sills, each with a wedge lintel. A moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, and the gables have stone copings. Corniced end stacks are present. The left return of the house features a ground-floor three-light sliding sash window with glazing bars on the left, a 12-pane sash stair window to the right, and a 12-pane first-floor sash to the left, all with surrounds similar to those on the front. A dentilled brick eaves cornice is visible here. A small attic hatch with a board door is located on the right return. Inside, an open-well staircase has a moulded handrail, plain balusters, and turned newel posts.
