Description
The bridge on the former Crowle-Belton Road over North Engine Drain is a road bridge dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed from tooled sandstone ashlar and features a single span with a single-carriageway width. The north-east and south-west abutments are splayed out towards the roadway entrances. The bridge has a segmental arch, a band, and a coped parapet situated between square end piers. The south-east pier and a section of the parapet have been partly rebuilt using rendered brick. This bridge forms one of a pair with another bridge over Hatfield Waste Drain, located approximately 15 metres to the south. The Double Rivers were created as part of Vermuyden's drainage scheme between 1626 and 1645. Historical maps from the late 18th to early 19th century show a pair of bridges at this location. The bridge was superseded around 1930 by new bridges to the east.
