Description
Waltham War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is prominently situated at the junction of Brigsley Road and Cheapside. The memorial features a two-stepped plinth topped with a wheel head cross, which has the words ‘Hope,’ ‘Faith,’ and ‘Glory’ in relief on its arms. The stem of the cross displays a figure of the risen Christ overlooking a soldier's grave, also in relief.
One face of the plinth bears the inscription: "1914-1918 FOR GOD FOR KING FOR COUNTRY TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WALTHAM WHO DIED AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE SELF SACRIFICE OF ALL WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR THIS MONUMENT IS DEDICATED." Another face simply states 'THE FALLEN,' followed by the names of the 16 men who lost their lives in the conflict. A third face lists '1939-1945,' followed by the names of the eight men who died in the Second World War.
