Description

The Registrar's Office, formerly the Corporation Grammar School, was built in 1867 for the Grimsby Corporation, with 20th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed of yellow brick with brown brick and ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is Classical in style.

The main range is rectangular, with subsidiary ranges to the rear. The front range is single-storied, composed of a projecting entrance bay to the right and a symmetrical three-bay section to the left featuring a central, forward-projecting pedimented bay. The façade is characterized by channelled and banded rustication, with brown brick bands. A round-headed entrance has a recessed 20th-century panelled door with side panels, beneath the original two-pane fanlight and a moulded ashlar arch with fluted impost bands and a tall stepped keystone. The three-bay section to the left features a continuous projecting ashlar sill band and windows in recessed panels: three closely-set windows to the pedimented bay, and pairs of widely-spaced windows to the side bays, all with narrow 2/2 sashes with margin lights, set beneath segmental brick arches with tall ashlar keystones linked by an ashlar string course. A bold wooden modillioned cornice tops the façade. The entrance bay has a bracketed ashlar tablet below the cornice bearing the inscription "ERECTED AD 1867", and an ashlar blocking course with a raised triangular-headed central section bearing a carved relief and the inscription "CORPORATION GRAMMAR SCHOOL". The roof is hipped, with the base of a former cupola centrally positioned. Low roof stacks are located to the rear. The left and right returns have similar details, with three closely-set windows to the front range; the left return has an inserted door and a recessed two-window section to the left. Additions to the rear are in matching style and materials. The interior was not inspected.

The building acts as a flanking pavilion to the Town Hall and is accompanied by the former Girls School (now the Doughty Centre).
