Description

Keldgate House, numbers 51 and 51A Keldgate, is an early 18th-century house with later additions. The main part is built of painted stucco with a pantile roof and wood spouting on moulded console blocks. It has three storeys and three windows, along with a projecting bay of the early 19th century featuring a triple sash window. Rusticated quoins are also present. The front door is set within a wood doorcase designed in the style of Batty Langley, featuring a boldly rusticated opening and a console key block carved with a draped female mask. An eight-panel door completes the entrance.

A subsidiary block, number 51A, dating to approximately 1740, is constructed of red brick and stands forward to the pavement edge. This block has four tall windows with gauged heads and a coved and beaded plaster crowning cornice; tumbled brickwork is visible to the gable ends. It also has a pantile roof. Within this block is a large, finely panelled music room. The overmantel in this room is based on William Kent's 'Designs of Inigo Jones' volume 2 (1727).

The main house also contains other fine interiors, notably the dining room, which is wainscotted throughout with bolection panelling. Bolection panelling is also found on the upper landing and as a diagonal chimney piece in a room above the dining room. The staircase has a closed moulded string (pulvinated frieze), turned balusters, a spiral curtail, plain newels, and moulded drop finials.

National Monument Register Photograph shall be added as last sentence of the description.
