Description

The Old Grammar School, dating circa 1696, was originally built for the Constable family. The Keldgate (north) elevation was updated in the early and late 18th century. It is a two-storey stucco building with seven windows, all now reglazed, and one blind window. The central doorway has a circa 1770 wood doorcase featuring an architrave, chambranles, moulded and enriched consoles, a frieze, a central tablet, a dentil pediment, a six-panel door, and a fanlight. A moulded brick eaves cornice and iron spouting are also present. Number 54A has a separate pantile roof and a War Memorial tablet.

The garden front, to the east, is constructed of red brick and is five windows wide; the central windows were originally closet-type and are now bricked up, with three being blind and featuring gauged heads. A plain tile hip roof tops this façade.

Inside, the staircase is from 1696 and features a closed moulded string, a pulvinated frieze, a massive plain newel with drop finials, a moulded handrail, vase-shaped balusters below, and spiral balusters above. The back stairs have a closed string, plain newels with ball finials, a plain handrail, and large vase-shaped balusters. Two rooms, one on each floor, exhibit raised moulded panelling to dado height. Chimneypieces of circa 1770 are found throughout, with fluted pilasters and fluted friezes. Two first-floor rooms have chimney-pieces incorporating landscape paintings on the overmantel panels. There is also one other wainscotted ground floor room. A rear first floor room has a moulded box cornice and joinery chimneypiece with a moulded frieze, mantelshelf and overmantel flanked by panelled pilasters. A rear ground floor room contains a Beverley-type peat-burning fireplace. Some windows have panelled window seats.
