Description
The Church of St Giles is a church that was rebuilt in 1840. The south side of the nave and chancel features ashlar stone, while the rest is made of brick and cobbles, rendered. It has slate roofs and consists of a west tower, a three-bay nave, and a one-bay chancel with a polygonal apse. The west tower has three stages, a plinth, and pilaster buttresses. It includes pointed belfry openings with hoodmoulds and a boarded west door in a pointed opening, also with a hoodmould, beneath a plaque that states: "THIS CHURCH WAS REBUILT 1840."
The nave has three two-light pointed windows with Y-tracery under hoodmoulds and oversailing eaves. The chancel features a three-light pointed east window with intersecting tracery under a hoodmould and also has oversailing eaves. Inside the nave, there is a 12th-century tub font that has been much repaired, decorated with incised interlace and roundels with wheels. There is a 15th-century piscina, which has been re-erected at the west end, displaying the coat of arms of the de Lellay family under an ogee canopy. A floor tablet bears the coat of arms and an inscription dedicated to Marmaduke Constable of Wassand, who died in 1690. In the chancel, there is a floor slab commemorating Radulph and Joanna de Lellay, who died in the 14th century, featuring a reclining female figure at prayer beneath a triple ogee arcade.
