Description

Thorngumbald Clough High Lighthouse is a Grade II listed lighthouse built in 1870 for Trinity House. It features a brick and ashlar base with a tower constructed from a rivetted wrought-iron frame, casing, and balcony, all painted red. The drum-shaped base is approximately 1 metre high and has a rough-faced ashlar top that supports a slender, tapered round lighthouse tower divided into three stages, with an overall height of about 12 metres.

The first stage is a tall open framework consisting of eight vertical ribs connected by six horizontal bands, along with a series of inner tension rods bolted to small central hoops. An iron ladder leads to a half-balcony, which supports a short ladder that provides access to an entrance hatch for the second stage, which has a rivetted outer casing. The upper stage features angle struts that support a balcony with plain railings, a small door with strap hinges on the south side, and a projecting rectangular window on the north side. The lighthouse is topped with a gutter, a domed cap, and a cylindrical ventilator.

This lighthouse is part of a series of Humber Estuary Lights, which also includes lighthouses at Spurn Point, Easington parish, and South Killingholme on the south bank. It, along with the nearby Low Lighthouse to the north and others at Salt End (now removed), replaced the lighthouse at Town End Road, Paull. The design is considered unusual and innovative, and the lighthouse is still in operation today.
