Description

This building comprises two houses at numbers 90 and 92 Walkergate, Beverley. It is believed to have been a theatre dating from an earlier period which was converted into two houses in 1754 by T. Wrightson. The building is two storeys high and constructed of red brick with a pantile roof, featuring one gabled dormer window. Originally, the front elevation had six windows, but those of number 90 were rearranged in the early 19th century, leaving a current arrangement of five windows. The windows are hung sashes with glazing bars, and have rendered lintels on the ground floor. A painted stone cill string runs along the ground floor windows. The doorcases, dating from approximately 1780, are wooden with shouldered architraves, chambranles friezes, and cornices. A moulded brick eaves cornice tops the building. Number 90 contains a mid-18th century staircase with a closed string, columnar newels, slender turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The first-floor rooms in number 90 have contemporary chimney pieces with simply moulded surrounds. The front room also features a moulded chair rail. The interior doors include some with fielded panels and others with sunk panels.
