Description

Thorney Crofts Farmhouse and the adjoining stable are located on Thorn Marsh Road in Thorngumbald. The farmhouse dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features pantile roofs. The main structure has a double-depth plan, consisting of a two-room south front with an entrance at the rear, a single-room kitchen addition on the right, and a similar stable addition on the left. The building stands two storeys high with two bays, and includes a single storey and attic with two-bay wings. There is a cement plinth, and the windows on the ground floor are C20 four-pane casements set in original openings, although the left ground floor opening is blocked. These windows are topped with stucco flat arches, and the raised gables feature tumbled-in brickwork. The end stacks were rebuilt in the 19th century.

The right wing has a C20 glazed porch over the door in its original opening, with a window to the right that matches the main range, and it also has tumbled-in brick on the raised gable and an end stack. There is a 19th-century outside lavatory attached to the right wing, which features a round-headed door, a coped screen wall that ramps down to the right, and a three-hole earth closet. The left wing has a blocked door and window beneath segmental arches, similar gable detailing, and an end stack. The left return includes a brick staircase with stone treads leading to an attic board door beneath a segmental arch.

At the rear, the main range has an entrance on the right with a pilastered doorcase and a half-glazed door set in a panelled reveal, along with a single window to the left, a round-headed stair window, and two first-floor windows that have similar C20 glazing to the south front. The stable to the right features a board door and an opening with a ventilation hatch beneath three panes. Inside, there is a dogleg staircase and moulded cornices.
