Description
Nos 3 and 4 Wednesday Market is a late 17th-century building that stands two storeys high with an attic. It is constructed of painted brick, likely over a timber frame. The first floor features five near flush frame sash windows with glazing bars. A prominent wood bracketed eaves cornice and a pantile roof with three gabled dormers enhance its appearance. The ground floor has a central arched opening flanked by two late 19th-century shop fronts. The end elevation displays double gables. The rear elevation includes Georgian sash windows and a diagonal-set brick eaves cornice. Inside No 4, there is a notable late 17th-century staircase with a closed string, vase-shaped balusters, a simply moulded handrail, ball finials, and drop-finials on the newels. Additionally, there is a cupboard door with moulded panels on the first floor and a wooden chimney piece from the 18th century in one of the first-floor rooms. It is possible that similar features exist in No 3.
