Description
The threshing barn and attached horse mill at New Breaks Farm date from the early to mid-19th century, with a later 19th-century addition blocking the horse mill. The barn is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof, while the horse mill has a pantile roof. The building is rectangular in plan, with the barn and horse mill attached at the west end, forming the north side of a foldyard next to a stable and granary range to the southwest.
The barn stands three stories high and has nine external bays, with full-height entrance bays projecting on the north and south sides. On the south side, there is a blocked wagon entrance with a board door and a four-light window beneath an original timber lintel and a segmental stretcher relieving arch. The side bays each contain three tiers of four breather slits, except for the lower left bay, which has a board door to the left beneath a segmental stretcher arch, with three slits to the right. The barn features stepped eaves and a hipped roof. The north side has a similar wagon entrance with a recessed two-fold board door beneath a timber lintel and a segmental relieving arch. The side bays have two lower tiers of four slit breathers on each side, with an upper tier featuring a segmental-headed hatch to the left flanked by a single breather, and a pair of similar glazed hatches and a single breather to the right. The lower left section is obscured by a later lean-to that is not of special interest.
The horse mill is a single-storey structure with a canted west end. It has a plinth, piers at the corners with recessed blocking between, board doors on the north and south sides, and inserted double board doors on the west. The horse mill also has a hipped roof. The interior has not been inspected. This barn is noted as the largest and most impressive in the Marshland region of the lower Trent and Ouse valleys, showcasing the high productivity of the newly enclosed and reclaimed land.
