Description

The Millennium Centre, formerly St Anne’s Church School, dates to 1848 and is situated on Warrington Road in Rainhill. Originally an Anglican church school, it was converted to a parish and community centre in 2001. The building is constructed of ashlar sandstone with some rubble, and has a rendered slate roof. It comprises two principal north-south ranges, originally with separate entrances for boys and girls, connected by a subsidiary range and a curtain wall containing an entrance to Warrington Road. The building is single-storey throughout, with a symmetrical front to Warrington Road, featuring three bays with triple round-headed lancet windows, and gabled ends to the long ranges. The curtain wall features a round-headed doorway flanked by lancets, with six pilaster buttresses. A moulded cornice, which rises centrally to accommodate a date plaque, extends to both sides. The western elevation is asymmetrical with six bays and pilaster buttresses, with round-headed lancet windows, an entrance with a cornice and stack, and a canted northwest corner. The eastern elevation, facing the churchyard, is symmetrical with five bays, treated similarly to the west, but including a gabled porch with a round-headed doorway, all under an upstanding cornice with a plaque and stack. A rubble projection sits to the left under a catslide roof. The rear elevation is largely of plain rubble with some ashlar and was not designed to be seen, although the outer gables have moulded verge cornices. Plaques acknowledge the involvement of T B Ingham MA (the incumbent) and his churchwardens, and the school is grouped with St Anne's Church.
