Description

Numbers 509-515 on Lord Street in Southport are shops that were likely built around 1905 and have been altered since then. Designed by Kiddie & Co, the building features a sandstone ashlar exterior, a glazed canopy, and a slated mansard roof, all in a classical style. It is a rectangular block located on a corner site with three storeys and an attic, comprising four bays.

The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts, while the upper floors are distinguished by giant pilasters topped with Greek key caps and a full entablature that includes a dentilled cornice and blocking course. Each bay contains a large rectangular window on every floor, with a panelled apron between the floors. Notably, the first-floor windows of Nos 513 and 515 feature stained glass with some Art Nouveau characteristics. The roof is adorned with four pedimented two-light dormers, and there is a four-bay return to Bold Street that matches the main style.

The glazed canopy is uniquely suspended on wrought-iron tie-rods connected to lion-mask fixings at the first-floor level, rather than being supported by cast-iron columns. Except for the section attached to Nos 509 and 511, which has been altered, the canopy features a cast-iron fascia with intersecting arcading, adorned with wreaths and white glass panels that display painted lettering. The canopy also curves around the corner to the Bold Street facade.

The interior has not been inspected. This building forms part of a group with the verandah attached to Nos 497-507 on the left and the verandah attached to Nos 517-523 on the opposite corner of Bold Street.
