House. South range of 1490-1506, east and west ranges of c.1540-1560, North range of 1598. For Norris Family. Timber frame on stone base with stone lateral stacks. Stone slate roof. 2 storeys with attic, courtyard plan. Coved cornice and gables, some bays project with gables. Windows of 5 and 6 lights with transom, leaded glazing. Entrance to north range has stone 4-centred arch and paired studded doors. Flanking stone walls have parapets with round projections and connect this item with bridge over moat (q.v.). Inscription above records building of range. Interior has great hall with 2 bay windows, fireplace with stone ornamental and panelling. Billiard room to west has panelling and elaborate timber overmantel and rich plaster ceiling. Wallpaper in corridor designed by W. Morris. One of the most important timber framed manor houses in the country, Speke Hall has connections with J. M. Whistler.
