Description
The dock wall, built in 1848 by Jesse Hartley, extends from opposite Sandhills Lane to Collingwood Dock and features several entrances. The wall is approximately 18 feet high and constructed from large, irregularly shaped blocks of granite. It includes large carved plaques, such as "Sandon Graving Docks 1848" and "Collingwood Dock."
The main entrance to Sandon Dock (A) is marked by two large square stone piers with cornices and iron lampholders. In the center, there is a brick watchman's hut, about 8 feet square, which has a cornice, modillioned eaves, a parapet, corner ornamentation, and a central chimney. A nameplate is displayed on the front within a pedimented panel, and wooden gates slide into the thickness of the wall, although the southern gate is now bricked up.
The entrance to Docks 47, 49, and 50 (B), located opposite Boundary Street, features three round tapering turrets with large bases and heavy abacus tops, along with deep slits at the sides for gates. A former entrance further south (C) has a similar design, but its center turret is oval in plan. The entrance to North Collingwood, North Salisbury, and Nelson Docks (D) consists of three round towers, with the center tower being taller and larger. Similarly, the entrance to Nelson, South Wellington, and Bramley Moore Docks (E) also has three round towers, with the center one again being taller and larger. There is a similar former entrance (now blocked) (F) near the Bramley Moore pumping station.
