Description

Middop Hall is a house dating from around 1600, constructed from squared coursed sandstone and topped with a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and two bays. The windows are mullioned and double-chamfered, featuring round heads for the lights. The ground floor windows consist of five lights, while the first-floor windows typically have four lights, except for the central window which has two lights. Some of the windows have been restored. The central bay contains a door with a chamfered surround, a triangular head, and an early 19th-century open pediment supported by curved brackets.

Chimneys are located on the left-hand gable, with a projecting stack, to the right of the right-hand bay, and on the right-hand (north) gable. The north gable features a three-light window with a hood on each floor, similar to those at the front. To the left of this is a chamfered door surround that has been blocked to form a window.

Adjoining the house at right angles is a farm building, likely from the mid-19th century, which has a slate roof. This building's south wall incorporates at least two fragments from Sawley Abbey, including one with two quatrefoils in shallow relief. The east (gable) wall also has a similar worn fragment. The north wall contains three windows with plain stone surrounds on the ground floor, and four plain stone door surrounds, three of which are blocked to form windows. On the first floor, there are two windows and two pitching holes, all with plain stone surrounds. The interiors of both the house and barn were not accessible during the survey but are reported to contain little of interest.
