Description
A terrace of four town houses, numbered 3 to 6, with attached railings, was built around 1850. Numbers 3 and 6 are now offices. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings, and have a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with single-fronted facades built in pairs, and have coupled rear extensions. The houses extend over cellars and each has 1 or 2 windows on the front elevation; the total number of windows is 1+2+2+2. Architectural details include a stone plinth, string course, plain frieze, moulded cornice, and low blocking course. Each pair of houses has a central doorcase with three engaged Ionic columns and a continuous entablature, framing a door with a round-headed panel and plain overlight. A through-lobby doorway is positioned between numbers 4 and 5, featuring a moulded stone surround and cornice, and a door with a wreath knocker. Ground-floor windows are tall, with raised sills on sill-blocks and wedge lintels; the window at number 6 is sashed without glazing bars, while the others have altered glazing. First-floor windows are similar, with number 3 having one and numbers 4 to 6 each having two. Numbers 4 and 5 have 20th-century dormers in the roofs, and number 6 has a smaller gabled dormer. A large lateral chimney stack is situated in the centre. Stone plinths enclose the cellar areas, with elaborate cast-iron railings still present at number 6. The left return wall of number 3 features two windows on each floor, similar to those at the front, and has a gable treated as an open pediment with an attic window. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected.
