Description

This building, known as No.1 Chapel and formerly Zoar Chapel, was constructed in 1853 for Particular Baptists and has since been altered. It features red brick in Flemish bond, sandstone dressings, and a slate roof. The chapel has a rectangular single-cell plan that is oriented at right angles to the street. It is one tall storey high and consists of three symmetrical bays. The gabled facade includes a sandstone plinth and brick pilasters with moulded stone caps, creating a pediment effect.

The wider central bay features a doorway with a moulded architrave, a large cornice supported by consoles, and double doors with round-headed panels. Above the doorway is a 12-pane sashed window with margin panes, a raised sill on sill-blocks, and a similar cornice on consoles. The narrower outer bays have very tall multi-paned windows, also with margin panes made of crown glass, raised sills on sill-blocks, plain lintels, and moulded cornices. The gable has a moulded coping and includes a stone panel with a sunk Maltese cross.

At the rear, which is now covered by an added two-storey lean-to, there are two tall windows similar to those at the front. The interior has been modernised with the addition of a suspended ceiling, but remnants of the original moulded cornice and the tops of pilasters with egg-and-dart decoration can still be seen through the rear windows. Historically, this chapel was built by Particular Baptists who broke away from the former Vauxhall Road Chapel in 1853 and was later taken over by the Catholic Apostolic Church in 1882.
