Description

The building is a railway bridge, with a viaduct and a former bridge located approximately 100 metres north. It was constructed in 1840 by Joseph Locke for the Lancaster and Preston Junction Railway Company. The bridge carries the Lancaster and Preston Railway over Fylde Road and features sandstone ashlar, while the viaduct is made of red brick and some engineering brick.

The bridge over Fylde Road has a triumphal-arch design, featuring a wide elliptical arch in the center and round-headed arches on each side. It includes banded rustication, prominent impost bands that run through the passages, rusticated voussoirs, raised keystones, broad terminal piers, a string course, and a parapet. The viaduct, which continues from the north end, is supported by seven semicircular arches, each with two tie-plates, and connects to the bridge over the former Lancaster Canal, which is now filled in. This canal bridge also has a tripartite form, with a wide elliptical arch in the center flanked by broad piers and short rock-faced retaining walls on the sides, terminating in similar piers. The archway features a raised keystone, voussoirs, a band, and a parapet similar to those of the first bridge.
