Description

The former Church of St Mark, located on St Mark's Road in Preston, was built between 1862 and 1863 by E.G. Paley, with a tower added in 1870. The church is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a nave with north transepts in the Decorated style, an apsidal chancel, and a tower at the northeast corner.

The nave consists of four bays and is buttressed, with a moulded sill-band running around it and hoodmoulds with block stops, some of which are damaged. The west front is marked by large buttresses that support a three-bay open porch. This porch has plain stone columns with square caps and features a gabled two-centred arch along with stilted side arches. Above the porch is a prominent two-centred arched five-light window, which includes a multifoil design in the head and a hoodmould with block stops.

The transepts rise nearly to full height, each containing two small two-light windows and a large circular window above. The north transept features wheel tracery, while the south transept has a plate-traceried multifoil surrounded by quatrefoils. The three-sided apse is adorned with tall two-light windows that extend into gables.

The tower is divided into four unequal stages, with clasping buttresses on the first two stages and a narrow octagonal stair-turret at the southeast corner. The third stage is tall and includes two very tall narrow two-light traceried windows on each side, although the leaded glazing is now damaged. The shorter top stage has clasping corner pinnacles and two louvred two-light belfry windows, each set beneath a steeply-pitched gablet that rises through the pierced parapet. The interior was not inspected. The church forms a group with the buildings at 67 to 91 Wellington Street on the south side.
