Description

This is a terrace of four houses, numbered 30 to 33, with attached railings. They were built in the mid-19th century and have been slightly altered since. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house having a single front and a rear extension.

The architectural style is characterized by an ashlar plinth, a string course, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course, all of which continue around the left end of the terrace. Each house is two bays wide, with the doorway located in the second bay. These doorcases feature engaged Ionic columns, a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and blocking course. The doorways have recessed panelled doors with plain surrounds and rectangular overlights. The windows are sashed and lack glazing bars, featuring raised sills, sill blocks, and wedge lintels. Ornamental cast-iron railings sit on a stone plinth in front of the houses, with the exception of number 30, which has replacement railings from the 20th century. The roof is hipped at the left end, with ridge chimneys. The left return wall of house number 30, which has two bays, incorporates matching window arrangements, with the exception of coupled windows on the ground floor of the rear bay.

The interior of number 33 retains a moulded plaster cornice and a large ceiling rose in the front room. The cellar contains an unusually complete set of original fittings, including two fireplaces, a washing boiler, a slopstone, and a stone table. The style continues to the right with number 34, which is listed separately.
