Description

This is a terrace of seven small town houses, numbered 2 to 8 Regent Street in Preston. The houses were built around 1850 to 1860 and have been altered since. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings, and have slate roofs. The design follows a double-depth plan, each house being single-fronted and built in pairs with adjoining halls and coupled rear extensions.

The houses are two storeys high, with cellars beneath, and generally feature two windows at the first floor, except for numbers 4 and 8, which have three. The window arrangement is stepped up the slope and visually linked by a ramped sill band at the first floor, along with a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice that also ramps up. The doorway to number 8 is located at the right-hand end, while all the other houses have coupled doorways, each with a moulded architrave, an emphatic dentilled cornice on consoles, and panelled doors with overlights. Numbers 4 and 8 have additional through-lobby doorways to the left, featuring deep lintels and moulded cornices. Each house has a sunk cellar window protected by a grating, a ground-floor window, and two windows above (except numbers 4 and 8, which have an additional window above the lobby door). The windows generally have raised sills and wedge lintels, although numbers 4 and 5 have mostly 12-paned sash windows, while the others have altered glazing. Large multi-flue chimney stacks mark the junctions between the pairs.

The interiors feature stick baluster staircases, moulded plaster cornices, and two-room cellars. The terrace forms a group with the Harris Institute, which is located to the south.
