Description

A pair of houses, now offices and flats, dating from the 1820s, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They have a double-depth plan, with number 8 being single-fronted and number 9 double-fronted. The buildings are two storeys high with basements and attics, and feature 2+3 bays. The basement is faced with ashlar and presented as a plinth, with a first-floor sill band, plain frieze, and a moulded cornice with a blocking course.

The doorways, located in the second and fourth bays, are approached by three steps and incorporate doorcases featuring engaged Tuscan columns, square abaci, plain friezes, moulded cornices, simple jambs with impost blocks, and recessed panelled doors with elliptical fanlights. Number 8 has two 12-pane sashes at the first floor, while the remaining windows are sash windows without glazing bars. All the windows have raised sills and wedge lintels. There are two gabled dormers on number 9, with chimneys located on the ridge and at the gables.

To the left of number 8 is a small, single-storey service wing containing one window and a door. Attached to the right of number 9 is a 20th-century addition, serving as the entrance to offices 9A and 9B. The property has three basement areas, left, centre and right, each with a complete set of railings featuring alternating curvilinear and stick balusters, along with gates to the service door of number 8 and at the right-hand end of number 9.

The rear elevations both incorporate two-storey canted bays. Number 9 also has a large two-storey bow with an observatory deck. The first-floor drawing room within flat 9A (number 9) retains fine features, including moulded plaster panels and cornices.
