Description
The former corn mill buildings, attached to the houses known as Portland Place, are located on Mottram Road in Stalybridge. These structures date back to the early 19th century, as indicated on a map from 1840. They are constructed from coursed rubble and feature some stone slab roofs.
Access to the site is through a depressed archway that includes voussoirs, keystones, and moulded imposts, which is connected to No 22 Portland Place on the right. To the left of the archway is a two-storey section with one window bay, where both windows have wedge lintels and later glazing, all beneath a coped parapet.
Inside the yard, to the left, is the office building, which has a canted two-window range and a doorway topped with a moulded cornice. Attached to it is the warehouse, which is four storeys high and features a three-by-three-by-one window bay arrangement, with some pedimented windows at the corner cross gables. The fenestration is regular, with tooled sills and lintels, and includes two large round-headed rusticated openings at the ground floor for vehicle access.
The office and warehouse create an irregular wedge-shaped plan, with the rear wall showing few openings, but featuring a central pediment. The northern end wall has a four-window range, with the left side consisting of taking-in doors with a lucarne. The ground floor windows have been blocked.
