Description

The steps adjacent to the Plaza Cinema were built in 1929 by the Stockport County Borough Engineer's Department, as indicated by a date in a shield on the structure. Made of Portland stone, these double flights of steps feature single debouchements that connect Wellington Road at the top of a steep incline with Mersey Square at the bottom. The hillside is supported by a series of high walls, designed in a sculptural manner, creating an impressive visual around the steps. There are bronze lamp bases arranged in three pairs at different levels, along with bronze railings leading to Wellington Road. This classical piece of civic improvement is part of a group with the Plaza Cinema nearby.
