Description
The Clock and Drinking Fountain is a Grade II listed structure located in Houldsworth Square, designed and erected by J. and H. Patteson of Manchester and unveiled in September 1920. It features a plinth with an inscription, a bronze portrait roundel, and a fountain niche with a bow on its faces. The fountain is supported by clustered columns made of pink granite with carved capitals. Above this, there is a block with a clock face, topped with a gable and a foliated finial.
The inscription dedicates the fountain to the memory of Sir William Houldsworth Baronet, acknowledging the generous contributions he made to enrich and beautify the village of Reddish, as well as his concern for the community's spiritual and physical well-being. Sir William was responsible for building St Elisabeth's Church and its surrounding complex, along with Houldsworth Mill and the workers' housing terraces, as part of a planned industrial estate in the 1870s.
