Description

The Church of St Clement is a parish church built between 1877 and 1878 by the architectural firm Paley & Austin. It is constructed of red brick and terracotta, topped with a plain-tiled roof, and features a fleche over the chancel that is clad in Westmorland slate. The church is designed in the 13th-century Gothic style, consisting of a nave with lean-to aisles, a clerestory, and a chancel.

The exterior showcases a nave and chancel that are separated by a heavy buttress across the aisles, which is echoed by a gablet or buttress in the clerestory. There are seven windows in each aisle that create a continuous arcade, with each window featuring three lights linked by a continuous hoodmould. The clerestory includes circular windows that are either sexfoiled or starred. The east window is tall and consists of five lights with intersecting tracery, topped by a high relieving arch that supports a slightly advanced gable adorned with three stepped blind lancets. Heavy angle buttresses are present at the east end.

Inside, the church has a high nave and chancel with seven bays, supported by circular sandstone columns in the arcade. The vaulting is made of brick with moulded ribs. The chancel features Doulton tiling and murals that depict religious scenes. Part of the nave has been partitioned off to create a separate meeting room.
