Description

The former Blue Bell Inn, originally a hotel and Yates's Wine Lodge, features two facades. The facade on Yorkshire Street is dated 1745, while the Newgate facade is inscribed "Wine Lodge 1911." The Yorkshire Street side is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof, while the Newgate side is made of ashlar. The building has a long, cranked plan with entrances on both streets.

The Yorkshire Street elevation has five bays and three storeys, with a central doorway. The ground floor features Victorian sash windows on the left and a 20th-century shop front on the right, along with stone sills and keystones. There is a modillion eaves cornice and an ornate lead rainwater head. The Newgate elevation, which is a single storey and five bays wide, is designed in an Edwardian Baroque style. It has gables over the two side bays and the central three, with semi-circular headed window and door openings that include keystones and leaded glass. Pilasters rise from corbels at the impost level, and the frieze displays "Rochdale Vintners Wine Co. Ltd." with a cornice above. Each gable features a semi-circular pediment with elaborate cartouches, the central one engraved "Wine Lodge 1911" and surrounded by a grapevine motif.
