Description
The former post office, now a public house, is located at the corner of Packer Street and Fleece Street. It was built in two phases; the first phase, which includes the northern three bays, was completed in 1875, while the second phase of two bays was added after 1892, both in a matching style. It is likely that the building was designed by James Williams, who served as the first surveyor for post offices at the Office of Works from 1859 to 1884. Williams designed similar post offices in classical and Italianate styles in Newcastle and Stockton-on-Tees.
This post office was replaced by a new facility on the Esplanade that opened in 1927. The building on Packer Street later served as the County Court offices from the 1930s until 1998 and is now a public house as of 2019.
The structure is built of ashlar and features five bays facing Packer Street and three bays on Fleece Street, rising to three storeys. The main elevation is symmetrical except for a door located in the left-hand bay. The ground floor is adorned with major and minor Doric pilasters, and the side facade is coupled with a Doric entablature. The windows have rectangular lights framed by consoles. The first floor windows are highlighted with dentil cornices and moulded architraves, while the second floor features a guilloche sill band, moulded architraves, and heavy entablatures with Greek key and dentil detailing.
