Description

Edgecroft is a house built in 1921 by Edgar Wood. It is constructed of brick with a stone slate roof and sandstone dressings. The house features a layout that is two rooms wide and two rooms deep, with a corner porch, hall, and stairs. An added garage is attached to the north-east side.

The front elevation is two stories high and has four bays, with a semi-circular opening leading to the recessed corner porch. The windows include plain 2, 3, and 4-light casements, with the ground floor featuring three-light windows that have timber mullions and a transom. A tall opening in the third bay provides light to the stair and landing. The eaves overhang, except at the corners where a large parapet extends into the coped gables, and the roof is steeply pitched.

On the right-hand elevation, there is a canted bay with unmoulded mullion and transom windows on the ground floor and mullioned windows on the first floor. All windows are leaded. The rear of the house has a similar bay window, but with timber casements instead of mullions and transoms, and the roof at the rear is flat.

The interior of the house is nearly complete and features an angle fireplace with a blue bell pattern tile surround by F. Day and a cavetto surround. There is also a fireplace from the 1920s designed by J.H. Sellers with a yellow Sienna marble mantel and surround, another fireplace designed by Wood for F.W. Jackson in 1908, and a panelled staircase. The gardens, walls, gates, and house were all designed as a cohesive whole, showcasing a remarkable example of Wood's small domestic work. This was his last project before retiring.
