Description
Mynshull's House is an office building above a shop, dated 1890, designed by William Ball and Thomas Brookes Elce, with carvings by J. Jarvis Millson. The building has been slightly altered at the ground floor. It is constructed of red sandstone with some moulded terracotta in a matching colour, and the roof is concealed. The narrow rectangular plan is positioned at right angles to the street, occupying part of an island site with one side facing a passage known as Hanging Bridge.
In the Jacobean style, the building features three low storeys and one bay. Notable architectural details include carved consoles supporting a moulded frieze above the ground floor, a central segmental bow above this with six-light mullioned windows flanked by pairs of small Ionic pilasters, and a wide lettered cartouche on the bowed panel between the windows. There are cornices over both floors and a large bowed upstand adorned with terracotta foliation. The frieze is lettered "MYNSHULL'S HOUSE" and features Jacobean-style strap-work cresting with obelisk finials, flanked by lions with shields on lettered pedestals. The return side is similar but simpler in design.
