Description

G-MEX is a railway station that has been converted into an exhibition hall and car park. It was built between 1876 and 1879 by Sir John Fowler for the Midland Railway Company and has undergone alterations. The structure features iron and glass on a brick undercroft, with brick side walls and a rectangular plan. It consists of a single segmental-vaulted vessel with 15 bays and a 210-foot span, supported by extensive undercrofts. The south side is pilastered and has two storeys, with three windows in each bay; the ground floor windows are round-headed, while the upper ones are square-headed. The roof is segmental arched and includes ridged bands of glazing. A 20th-century glazed canopy has been added to the entrance at the north end. The vaulted undercroft features intersecting tunnel vaults, and an intended entrance block at the north end was never constructed.
