Description

This is a row of four townhouses, now used as shops and offices, likely built in the late 18th century and altered over time. The buildings are constructed of red brick with some sandstone detailing, and they feature a double-depth plan with each house being single-fronted and having back extensions; No. 71 includes a rear wing. The row stands three storeys high above cellars, with a window arrangement of 3:3:3:3, although No. 71 is wider than the others. There is a plinth and wooden modillion eaves, except for Nos. 65 and 67, which have plain wood eaves.

Nos. 65 and 67 have been altered at the ground floor to accommodate 20th-century shops. Nos. 69 and 71 feature Tuscan pilaster doorcases with open pediments, panelled doors accessed by three renewed steps, and fanlights with radiating glazing bars. The sashed windows have raised sills and flat-arched heads, with 12 panes on the ground and first floors and 9 panes on the second floor. The upper floors of Nos. 65 and 67 have similar sills and heads but with altered glazing. There are various tall chimneys on the front and rear slopes of the roof, which has water-tabling indicating it was once higher. The return side of No. 71 has four windows plus one that is blocked. The rear and interior of the buildings were not inspected. This row represents a rare survival of domestic buildings from this period in the city center.
