Description

The Northern Stock Exchange, located at Nos. 2 to 6 Norfolk Street in Manchester, is a stock exchange building that has been converted to offices. It was constructed in 1907 by the architectural firm Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has undergone alterations since its original build. The building is made of Portland stone, although the roof is not visible.

It features a rectangular plan on an island site and is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style. The structure consists of three storeys and an attic, with seven symmetrical bays. The ground floor showcases channelled rock-faced rustication and a cornice, while the end bays are highlighted by open pediments supported by coupled columns. The main range is adorned with panelled pilasters and swagged cartouches at the tops, along with a moulded main cornice and a blocking course.

The end bays have square-headed doorways with carved shields in open pediments, and large round-headed windows are positioned between these. The first floor includes five oriel windows, and the second floor features colonnaded windows. The building is topped with box dormers and tall stone chimneys, and Art Nouveau railings decorate the corners. The sides and rear of the building are less elaborate. The interior has not been inspected.
