Description
St Helena Mill is a cotton waste spinning mill built around 1820, with two additional mills added in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, which have since been demolished. The mill has been disused since 1979. It is constructed of coursed and squared stone with a slate roof and features four storeys with 11 by 3 bays. The building is oriented at right angles to the River Croal, which runs immediately behind it. Each floor has small rectangular windows with flat stone lintels, although the lower openings have been modified due to the now-demolished buildings that were added against the east wall of the original structure. There are taking-in doors on each floor located in the center of the gable wall and towards the center of the east wall. A square section brick stack, which has been reduced in height, projects from the southeast corner next to the internal engine house. Inside, a single row of cast-iron columns supports timber beams, and the attic features a queen strut roof. The site was initially developed with a water-powered mill around 1780, which was replaced by the current building around 1820, designed for steam power. By around 1830, it was in use as a cotton waste spinning mill.
