Cotton waste spinning mill. c1820, with 2 further mills now demolished added late C19-early C20. Disused since 1979. Of coursed and squared stone with slate roof. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, 11x3 bays, built at right angles to the River Croal which runs immediately to the rear of the building. Small rectangular windows on each floor with flat stone lintels, the lower openings modified when buildings (now demolished) were added against the east wall of the original building. Taking-in doors on each floor in centre of gable wall, and towards centre of east wall. Square section brick stack (reduced in height) projects from south-east corner, adjacent to internal engine house. INTERIOR: a single row of cast-iron columns carry timber beams internally. Queen strut roof to attic. HISTORY: the site was first developed with a water-powered mill c1780, replaced by the present building c1820 which was built for steam power.
