Description

The Church of St Chad is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1937 by R. Nickson. It features red brick with a high blue brick plinth and low pitch copper roofs, showcasing a modern style with Scandinavian influences. The church has a tall chancel, east vestries and rooms, a nave with aisles, a west baptistery, and a northwest campanile. The design includes mainly tall narrow metal-framed windows, with a blank east end that has an incised cross high in the gable. The chancel is flanked by tall triple windows, while the surrounding vestries and rooms are much lower. The aisles also feature tall windows, and a narrow clerestory above has a long row of small windows that emphasize the horizontal line. The aisles extend beyond the west end, where there are four tall windows in the gable wall, with the baptistery located below. There are entrances in both the southwest and northwest corners, the latter housing the campanile, which has an entrance on the west side, an arched window above, and a tall blank wall leading up to the stepped-in bell stage with tall bell openings.

Inside, the high soaring chancel is illuminated from either side and has a round arch leading to the nave. The long nave was partitioned at halfway in 1987, but the square nave piers remain, supporting the clerestory and nave roof, which features massive partly decorated tie beams and a partly shallow canted design. Some contemporary fittings are still present. Despite the partition, this impressive design continues to be effective and was published in "50 Modern Churches" by the Incorporated Church Building Society in 1945.
