Description
Saighton Primary School, built in 1862 for the 2nd Marquis of Westminster, is likely designed by Edward Hodkinson. The school is constructed from brown brick in English bond on a weathered sandstone plinth, topped with a red tile roof. It features stone ovolo mullioned windows, some of which are also transomed, and all have bold hoodmoulds, with double-ovolo reveals and heads to both windows and doors. Near the school entrance, there is a simple open belfry made of sandstone, accompanied by a taller brick chimney; the bell was moved here following the demolition of the Church of England school at Handbridge in 1862. A louvred ventilator sits beneath a short, square spire at the junction of the roofs. To the right, there is an extension to the school, likely from the 1900s, which is built of harder red brick and maintains compatible architectural details. Surrounding the playground are cast iron railings set on a sandstone plinth, featuring a double top rail with cross-bracing.
