Description

The war memorial, located approximately 15 yards east of the Congregational Church in Winsford, was erected in 1920. It is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar and features grey granite plaques. The memorial has a square base made up of two steps that support a moulded plinth leading to a square body topped with a cyma moulded cornice. This cornice supports a square block, which holds a circular cast iron lamp stand adorned with foliage in relief, featuring twisted ladder supports on the sides and a hexagonal lantern above.

The eastern front of the memorial displays the inscription "GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1919" on the second step, while the base bears the phrase "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." Above this, a small granite plaque is inscribed with "1939-1945" and the names of two men. The main body of the monument features a larger rectangular granite plaque inscribed "IN LOVING MEMORY," listing those who died, those missing, and those who died in camp. Above this, the frieze reads "THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES."

On the north side, the cornice is engraved with "FOR GOD AND FREEDOM," and below it is the inscription "IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICE OF," followed by a list of names. At the base of the plinth, the phrase "FOR HE SHALL GIVE HIS ANGELS/CHARGE OVER THEE TO KEEP/THEE IN ALL THY WAYS" is also present. The west front features the frieze "THEY GAVE THEIR SERVICE," with a list of names below on a granite plaque, and the base reads "O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD FOR HE IS GOOD/FOR HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER." On the south side, the cornice states "THEY RISKED THEIR LIVES," and the base features the inscription "GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND STRENGTH/A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE."
