Description

Number 25 Street and Number 29 Row is an undercroft and town house located in Chester, likely dating from the late medieval period but rebuilt from Row level upward in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of sandstone and brown brick, topped with a grey slate roof that has a ridge at a right angle to the front. It has four storeys, including the street and Row levels, and consists of one bay.

The building features a late 20th-century shopfront at street level, while the Row level has an altered mid-19th-century shopfront with three cross-shaped panels beneath a 12-pane window with an overlight, and a door with a cross-shaped panel beneath six panes to the east. There is a slender, moulded cast-iron balustrade at the Row front. Each upper storey has a centrally placed sash window with a plain sill and wedge lintel made of painted stone; the third storey has a 20-pane window, and the fourth storey has a 16-pane window. A painted moulded cornice, likely made of plaster, adorns the top of the building. The three-storey brick rear has a flush gable and three chimneys on the east side.

Inside, the undercroft measures 27.1 by 4.4 meters and is constructed of relatively poor-quality masonry, likely from the late medieval period. The upper storeys appear to be entirely from the 19th century.
