Description

This pair of carriage gates, overthrow, and piers, built around 1870, are designed in a classical revival style. The gates and overthrow are made of wrought iron, while the piers are constructed from ashlar stone. Each gate features an ornate surround, dogbars, and a lockrail, with a decorative centerpiece in the upper panel: the left panel displays three stags' heads, and the right panel showcases a Grosvenor sheaf, both set within symmetrical patterns of foliated scrollwork. The overthrow is triangular, adorned with foliated scrollwork and a sheaf in the Garter as the central motif. The square piers have moulded plinths and caps, with a recessed panel on each side, topped with urns as finials. These gates are located in the wall between the park and garden designed by Alfred Waterhouse, although they may have been added later, possibly by Sir Edwin Lutyens, according to Pevsner and Hubbard.
