Description
No. 19 Newgate Street is a town house, now used as an office, likely built around 1770. It features Flemish bond brown brick and has a grey slate roof that is not visible from the front. The building is three storeys high and consists of one bay. At the base, there is a painted stone plinth and three stone steps leading to a replaced door with six fielded panels, framed by an architrave and a pulvinated frieze beneath a glazed open pediment. The ground floor has two replaced recessed horned 12-pane sash windows.
On the second storey, there is a sill band that is broken at the centre, with two more replaced recessed horned 12-pane sashes. The third storey features a central replaced recessed horned 9-pane sash with a painted stone sill. The windows are topped with rusticated wedge lintels, except for the third storey, which has false keystones. A painted stone cornice runs beneath the brick parapet, which has painted stone coping; the parapet at the south end conceals the roof. There are two lateral chimneys.
At the rear, each storey has a flush 4-pane sash window, and there is a rear wing that includes a door and a small-pane window on its south side, along with a dual 16-pane sash on the second storey and two 20th-century windows on the third storey. Inside, the north front room contains a two-panel door and embrasure benches, while the rear room has a door with two fielded panels. The upper storeys could not be inspected.
