Description
No. 23 Newgate Street is a modest cottage, now used as an office, likely built in the early 18th century and altered over time. It features Flemish bond brown brick and a grey slate roof, standing two storeys tall with one bay. The first storey includes a replaced 2-panel door and a 1-pane shop window. There is a three-course floorband on the second storey, which has two replaced flush horned sashes with painted stone sills and wedge lintels that have false keystones. A three-course band runs beneath the brick parapet, topped with plain painted stone coping. A chimney is located behind the main ridge, and there is a wing at the back that has a north gable chimney and modest windows, with its ridge parallel to the front.
Inside, the cottage features doors with four and five fielded panels, and window embrasures with panels beneath. Some Georgian cornices are present. The open-well staircase is of high quality for such a simple dwelling, showcasing an open string with carved brackets, three column-on-vase balusters per step, a rose, a swept rail, and a pilastered dado. The narrow hall has segmental archways, while a rear stair features square newels with knobs, a closed string, and turned balusters.
