Description

This is a section of the City Walls, dating from the late 11th to early 12th centuries. It runs from Thimbleby's Tower to Old Newgate, at the south-east corner of the former Roman legionary fortress. The wall was likely damaged during the Civil War (1644-1646) and was subsequently stripped of its defensive features. Between 1702 and 1708, it was adapted as a raised promenade and has undergone repairs at various times. The wall is approximately 60 metres long and has a wall walk that is about 2 metres wide. It is constructed of red coursed rubble sandstone, with some areas having been refaced. The inner face of the wall has a projecting plinth.
