Description

This description covers part of the city wall in Chester, which dates from the late 1st century to early 2nd century and late 11th century to early 12th century. The wall was converted into a raised promenade between 1702 and 1708 and has undergone repairs at various times. It features purple-grey sandstone Roman ashlar masonry alongside softer red sandstone medieval and later coursed rubble, with some Roman stones possibly being reused.

There is a slightly projecting plinth, likely Roman, located behind the Trustee Savings Bank, and another Roman plinth with two courses of ashlar behind the Wesley Methodist Church, which has 19th-century rebuilding above it. Some areas have been refaced in brick. An L-shaped ashlar stair with 14 and 20 steps leads towards St John Street. The inner face of the wall has been partly refaced in brick in the northern section, featuring blank arches and eight circular apertures. Additionally, there is a concrete footbridge from the wall walk to the Grosvenor shopping precinct, constructed in the 1960s.

Attached to the wall, at the rear of the Wesley Methodist Church, are three eroded 19th-century gravestones with a frieze above inscribed "WESLEYAN CHAPEL."
