Description

The memorial is a war memorial cross situated within the grounds of the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, in the northern part of the churchyard, aligned towards the north-east gate. Constructed in sandstone, the cross stands approximately 2 metres high and depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ with a Gothic-style hood at the top. This hood features a blind arch containing the monogram INRI carved in low relief on a scroll. Below the cross arms, the rectangular shaft is inscribed with the words JESU/ MERCY in low relief. The rear of the shaft displays a low relief carving of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. The cross shaft rises from a rectangular plinth, which in turn is set upon a base of two rectangular steps. The front of the plinth is inscribed in raised lettering: + IN MEMORY OF +/ OUR GALLANT DEAD/ 1914 TO 1918/ 1939 TO 1945.
